Three types of Innovation in Projects

I´m going to be talking about innovation and the 3 different types of innovation, these innovations levels are the incremental, radical, and finally discontinuous.

To begin with, Incremental innovation consists of creating extra value to an existing product or service just by its improvement through a process of adding new features or simply by improving those which are included. A clear example of this type of innovation are the previous version of a smartphone brand with the newest version of it. An improvement but no so revolutionary.

Second, there is the radical innovation, which is based also on adding extra value to a product or service, but in a whole different manner. This is because it has a huge impact on people´s life and it might solve a problem that people have not been even aware of. A graphic example may be a conventional type of car BMW comparing to a Tesla electric one, this is an important change/variation of the model of the product with valuable new features.

Finally, there can be found the discontinuous innovation which is different from the two mentioned since it changes not the product or service but the industry itself. One clear example can be old typewriters with the computer; or recently we can observe how different is a flight from one country to another, but there are companies offering out of orbit flights. As you can identify, these changes and innovations required so much improvement, a revolutionary movement in the industry.

Now, technology 4.0 is directly related to innovation as it can be used to help many projects and industries to reach certain levels of innovation, especially the discontinuous one. How? Simply by using important tools such as Bigdata, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, among others.
